St. Brieux was founded in 1904, when settlers from Brittany, France, took up land in the district. They named the community in memory of Saint-Brieuc, the French town where many of them had come from. Families kept arriving from France until the First World War began in 1914, and St. Brieux remains one of the few French-speaking communities in Saskatchewan.
